1771/72 Frederick the Great had the Palais Barberini in Potsdam built on the model of the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. In January 2017, the Museum Barberini moved into the specially reconstructed Palais. The collections of the Palazzi Barberini and Corsini in Rome, which house outstanding masterpieces of Italian Baroque painting, are therefore closely related to the history of the Potsdam Museum and have congenial exhibits for its fascinating architecture. The publication, the first project of the Museum Barberini in the field of the Old Masters, shows themes and stylistic developments of the Baroque in Rome. The city was the cultural center of Europe in the 17th century, not only in architecture but also in fine arts. In addition, the catalog highlights the important role played by the Barberini family and Pope Urban VIII as patrons and collectors. With essays by Maurizia Cicconi, Michele Di Monte, Inés Richter-Musso, Sebastian Schütze, Franziska Windt.
